Push Rod Seals on a British bike (and some Harley & a few early Japanese) can be mistakenly pinched or squashed during installation and lead to annoying, oily leaks.
We carefully choose the correct sizes and install our top & bottom seals to be sure they do not
pinch or tear during installation.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSSION REBUILD
Top end, bottom end, or complete
We're often asked how much it will cost to rebuild an engine. We have no one set price as every engine is different. Our examples below (see directory at the right) indicate the number of labor hours for that particular job. Parts are extra. Our labor rate is $90 per hour. Turn around time = 4 to 6 months.
? Questions we ask prior to accepting an engine rebuild project: year, make & model of the vehicle? what is your $ budget for this rebuild? crating & shipping or delivering the engine/vehicle? when & who worked on it previously? what needs to be done? top end only? bottom end only? complete rebuild? known damage? rebuild transmission? # of cylinders? new parts? missing parts? internal damage? does the oil pump work? broken bolts? cylinder boring? crankshaft balancing? cosmetic polishing or media blasting? new stainless steel engine bolts? painting? test run? And most importantly ... why do you feel the engine needs to be rebuilt?
NOTE: 1. Unless the engine is from a running, 4-stroke Japanese bike, the entire vehicle will have to be provided for us to properly test ride, tune & synchronize. If there are other mechanical problems with the vehicle, they will be repaired prior to testing - no exceptions.
2. We do not do "piecemeal" work. No valve job or cylinder boring unless we do the entire rebuild - no exceptions.
3. Engines shipped alone will require the carburetors which will be rebuilt along with the engine -no exceptions.
Want us to rebuild your engine? Please contact us via email (info@rcycle.com) with detailed answers to the question above. If we agree to the engine rebuild project, it will follow the same paperwork procedure as a restoration. Please familiarize yourself with our Estimate Process, Estimate Fee ($90 to $180) & Restoration Agreement.
The final step in our total engine rebuilding is to run/start the engine for the customer, preferable with the customer in our shop. If not possible, we send a video of the engine running prior to delivery.
This intensive, 100% rebuild with paint, polishing, re-chroming, and many new parts required over 5 months turn-around time and 34 labor hours.
The engine is ready for its first test run & fine tuning.
Do you wwn an early British bike or BMW? Wondering if you should bother going into the bottom end and having the sludge trap cleaned or oil slinger serviced? Take a look at what we found in a recent bottom end service on 1972 Triumph Bonneville T120R.
Notice how the sludge trap opening is almost completely filled. Had this completely filled and not been cleaned out, oil would not be able to reach the rod bearings and could cause serious engine damage.
The shiny bits you see in this debris are tiny metal shavings from the internals of the engine such as bearing material.
This is what it means to "split the cases."

Complete Engine rebuild of a 1969 Triumph Bonneville T120R. The bike had been "restored" by another shop, but after only 3 miles, the engine leaked oil so badly the customer brought it to us to be rebuild. The customer had the crank shaft balanced by House of Balance in Maryland. When it returned to us, this top & bottom end engine rebuild with engine case polishing required 19 hours of labor + parts.
